8 Dec 2010, Advocate News - Season for Marauding Lorikeets SWAN Valley grape growers and orchardists are being encouraged to prepare now to minimise potential damage to their produce by rainbow lorikeets. The bird is not native to the area and is a declared pest in the south of the State. Swan Valley Declared Species Group spokesman Kim Taylor said they were intelligent and aggressive feeders. “Firearms are the most practical way of getting rid of them,” he said. “Alternatively, grape growers could use netting but it is extremely expensive and would not be nice to look at if all the vineyards on West Swan Road had netting over them.” Mr Taylor said the full impact of the birds would be felt closer to Christmas. “At the moment, there are a couple in the area, but there will be greater numbers when the fruit ripens in around three to four weeks,” he said. He reminded growers to keep neighbours informed of their activities and to be aware of requirements under the Firearms Act. “It is important to provide 24 hours notification to neighbours and police of any intention to use firearms to control rainbow lorikeets, and to check the suitability of the firearms,” he said. “Make sure only low velocity ammunition is used, be aware of what is behind the target being shot at and of the range of your firearm versus the size of your property.” Department of Agriculture and Food project manager Marion Massam said taking early action could prevent the pests from getting into a routine of eating the fruit. The department requests growers keep a record of the number of birds they remove and advise the department.
