Whiteman Park has trumped a host of higher-profile competitors to be named Western Australia’s top tourist attraction.
The shock win for the popular family park came at the 2016 Tourism Council of WA Awards on Tuesday evening, where Rottnest Island took out the silver medal and Perth Zoo the bronze.
The much-maligned Perth Bell Tower and Bibra Lake fun park Adventure World were also nominated in the same category.
Whiteman Park thanked all its visitors on Facebook for their triumph.
“We’re so proud to have been awarded this … thanks to all our wonderful staff, volunteers and visitors. You’re all amazing!” it posted on Facebook.
The award comes off the back of a $250,000 upgrade for the Whiteman Park facility, which added extra toilet facilities and existing bike and footpath infrastructure.
The vast park surrounds also include Caversham Wildlife Park and features several vintage car museums and tram rides.
